The Wedding Mania

Let me start by saying, planning a wedding is no cakewalk and I say this with experience. Between the life changing decision of getting married to actually planning the wedding, many things are bound to trip you up. Don’t get me wrong, it was the best decision of my life to plan the entire wedding myself but doing it all by yourself also has some potential pitfalls.

Even though everything went as planned at my wedding, I definitely would have done a few things differently (If I could go back and do it).

There are a million things to do to make the most important day of your life perfect. Between juggling vendors, caterers, musicians etc along with our normal day to day activities, it does get very difficult. So the best way to handle this is to assign the work to your responsible friends and family members. The biggest realisation I had at my wedding was that not everybody is going to be happy. You are bound to disagree, argue and offend someone. Let me just stop right there and tell you, DO NOT feel guilty about that. You should definitely take into consideration the opinion of your close ones but in the end, it is your day.

Looking back, i think the best decision our families made was the venue. My husband and I both wanted a winter wedding with a small gathering of close friends and family and a beach side venue. So we finalised on GOA. The property we chose had a private beach and more than enough rooms to accommodate all our guests. Not to forget, the food was amazing. Trust me , all that the guests care about is the food, venue and music. So, we prioritized those elements of the wedding that mattered most to us instead of splurging on everything.

We each have our own version of ideas stored away for our wedding plans. I had a million ideas for my dresses and hair do for the big day. For some brides this may be the most exciting bit but for others, it can be very stressful. Honestly, don’t feel obliged to do anything at your wedding just for the heck of it. That goes for the rituals too, skip them if they don’t really matter to you.

When the big day comes, just be prepared to smile and look beautiful. This is supposed to be a life changing day for you, make sure you start it on the most positive note. Don’t stress!!! Your wedding day is going to be perfect no matter much or little you’ve planned.

Just work things.

Career transition is frightening as well as exciting at the same time.  Everyone is looking for success and success is often attributed to clarity , technique and the willingness to learn, among other things. Whether you’re at the beginning of your career or at the wake of a successful promotion, leadership and management play a key role. In other words, success is directly proportional to leadership.

The on going leadership policy is based upon the theory that leaders aren’t born, they are made. There are hundreds of paid seminars conducted for management training, but not everyone finds the time to actually attend them. In my knowledge, one can be a good leader through practical experience. Leadership is all about producing other leaders, The focus should be on training people to be as good as you. There is a very thin line between being excited about being in a position where you have the authority to tell other people what to do and helping others reach the same place as you. The later is a quality of a true leader.

A leader has to be very clear with his short and long term goals. The focus should be on building the next generation of leaders who can surpass their mentors. Good communication and clarity of vision is the key to training and developing your people. Once you communicate your desire and intention, there is a higher chance of achieving it. Of course, action speaks louder than words so commitment to the goal is important.

Business, honestly is not the easiest thing to do. But its important for new leaders and mangers to know that no one is invincible. When you learn to channel your thoughts in the most strategic way, everything automatically falls into place. For that, there has to be a common ground of understanding between a leader and his team.  A leader needs to influence his people and that can only happen by  building a relationship with them. Leadership can be lonely and self doubting most of the times. Once you accept that, you can push yourself hard enough and train your mind to face any situation

Leadership traits take time to develop and it cannot be instilled in you overnight. The more honest you are about how you are perceived as a leader, the better equipped you will be to avoid pitfalls and influence your team in the most positive way.

Too much to offer.

Its been quite a long time since I’ve posted something on my blog. But the last few weeks have been a whirlwind of highs and lows. I’ve been on a travelling spree, going from one city to another. And now that I am back, I’ve begun to contemplate my future once again.

So I am in my mid twenties and this is probably the worst time to be ideal. This is that time of your life when you are filled with energy and the will to do something and become someone but not everybody gets to do that. And to top it all , we have so much pressure to know exactly where we are going in life and to have a specific plan to get there. But we fail to account for the fact that things change with time and so do we.

x zx

Sometimes I really beat myself up about it. I constantly keep thinking about how unproductive I am being right now and how nothing in my life is constant. But then I pull myself together and remind myself that the world is too big and even though I haven’t contributed a lot so far, I  still have too much to offer in the time to come.

Life is too short to fuss over things you cannot alter or people you can’t change. The problem is when you have a lot of free time, you tend to over analyse everything. We need to understand that every situation hits rock bottom and from then on you can only do better. Be it in your career or your relationship or anything else, for that matter.

Everyone has their own battles to fight and in every stage of our lives we face problems which seem difficult in the beginning but the best way to over come such problems is by loving them.  Every situation is easy to tackle once you start controlling your thoughts. Some people have relationship issues while some have work problems. And I say this in the most pragmatic way that  there is always more than one way to address a problem.

In most of my blogs I have always stressed on the importance of being positive. Don’t let your current situation hinder your future. Each day that you think you’ve wasted and each mistake you make will eventually help you guide your future. Trust your instincts and believe that the path you take now will only lead to a brighter future.

Things to do when you’re bored.

Ever been sitting around all day at home wondering what to do? Well, I have been doing that for quite some time now. Though it wasn’t my first choice . But I am one of those people who thrives to be productive and when I cant think of anything to do, I just get restless. Now I have realized that every person has an ability to entertain themselves. At the least we all have brains to come up with at least one idea that gets you through a week or perhaps. in my case, a few months. Just don’t try to find the most perfect activity to do because trust me that is a sure way to do no activity at all. I have a list of things that I have been doing for a while now. I hope you find some interest in at least one of these things.

I get this one from my mother. She is an amazing cook and I have picked up a little from her. If you are a foodie and find yourself with some extra time , you should definitely start baking. Its a great way to keep your mind occupied and besides this is something that will always be useful.

Sometimes I get this major craving for desserts and if I am too lazy to step out of my pyjamas, drive down to a bakery and buy a piece of cake then I just look up a recipe and start baking myself. In fact I have also started taking orders for cakes, desserts, chocolates etc and make a few extra bucks on the side. Its the best way to splurge on your shopping urges.

Black forest cake for a friends Birthday

Just get out of your house and go for a jog or a bike ride or maybe just a walk. Whatever makes you happy. This is a good way to kill time and keep yourself fit. As already mentioned, I bake a lot so therefore I eat a lot which is why I NEED to workout. This way you at least don’t carry the guilt of hogging. I have come up with a schedule in which 3 days of the week I do yoga and the other days I go for a jog. Trust me, its made a big difference in not only my body but also my mind, I feel a lot fresher and healthier. I also make it a point to eat healthy most of the week and squeeze  in a little bit of junk here and there.

This idea will really come handy if you have just got out of a corporate world. I had so much of catching up to do on my favorite shows and movies after leaving my job. I was literally stuck to my laptop for an entire week watching Elementary.

On a rainy day, make some hot coffee and caramel popcorn and start your movie marathon. It will make you feel so relaxed and you’ll also be spending quality time with yourself doing things that make you happy.

Doing volunteer work is the best way to feel better about yourself. This way you’re not only making your day better but you’re also improving someone else’s day. After a long long time, last year on my b’day I went to an orphanage and interacted with the kids there. It was beautiful. I realized that they have immense talent but not the right channel to execute it. So with the help of the in charge, we organised a talent fest. All the kids got the opportunity to display their talent and it was such a boost to their confidence.

This is not going to hurt, it’ll only make your life better. It will be like  a treasure hunt of your past. I came across so many of my old things that I could still make use of and so many things that I could donate. This should be like a cleansing ritual to be carried out every 6 months. I just get rid of all the things that I haven’t used in 6 to 8 months . That way I can clear out space for newer things.

These are some of things I do, I hope you can find something that helps you pass your time. Its good to take some time out from your regular day to day chores and recharge.

If you have some ideas on creative things to do, please do share. 🙂

Abode of the clouds.

Travelling is one of the best ways to relax and discover new places. I specifically dedicated this year to quietness and relaxation which is why for this new years eve, I traveled to one of the most beautiful hill stations in India, Shillong , which is the capital of Meghalaya. Shillong, also known as the “Scotland of the east” is a land of undulating hills with luxuriant green cover with a wide variety of exotic flora and fauna. It forms a part of the North Eastern States of India.

If you’re more of an aesthete and are looking for something happy and heartwarming for a short trip then this is the place to be. It is a perfect spot for leisure travelers who prefer to explore every corner of the country which are offbeat and offer lovely drives and walks.

(Enjoying the sun-kissed morning on the way to cherrapunjee)

Shillong offers a wide range of activities which includes trekking, caving, rock climbing, water sports etc. It also houses some of the most beautiful churches and temples which are of great religious significance. A little way to the South of Shillong lies the Shillong Peak which is the highest point in Shillong. This is definitely a must see spot because the view from this point is simply magnificent for it overlooks the whole of Shillong town.

We also took a short day long trip to the villages around Shillong. There is Cherapunjee which a very popular spot which covers various waterfalls and caves. Mawlynnong, which is the cleanest village of Asia with crystal clear streams and sacred groves. These are a few of the sites around Shillong. It is a perfect destination for the romantic as well as the adventurer. It is also a shoppers paradise and a musicians stage. There are also several eating outlets where the travelers can try out the local delicacies.

(One of the many lakes among the hills)

Shillong can be reached by air, by rail as well as by road. The availability of the accommodation units are modest and the amenities of the metropolis is not available but the scenic beauty of this place is enough to provide the comfort you require.

In all, it a must go place and should be a part of your travel list this year. Though I should give you a little heads up. The best time to visit Shillong is October-November and March-April. Trust me, on your way to this heavenly place, you’ll be greeted with beautiful landscapes and this will be a trip worth remembering.

Take a little time off!!!

Happy Holidays.

” The secret of getting ahead is getting started .”

With the holiday seasons beginning, we start to see and feel the difference around us. On one side you see happy families eagerly waiting to decorate their Christmas trees and light their houses to welcome the new year and on the other side you see people with no hopes and expectations from the coming year. Well, they all have their reasons and experiences based on which they choose to be happy or gloomy.

I personally think we should all embrace the new beginning in a positive manner. In fact, everyday is a new beginning. We should start each day by making room for what feels right instead of holding on to what hurts. We fail to realize that most things, whether good or bad is only a part of our life because we keep thinking about it. We need to let go of the things which is not in our control.

At the beginning of a new chapter in our lives, we expect to control every aspect of it. But whether we like it or not, we cannot choose the beginning and we definitely cannot choose the ending. But to every end that does not go your way, you should find a way to get ahead and start over. Honestly, its easier said than done but when the pieces of your life are shifting around making space for new stories and experiences, you are bound to feel out of control.

With this post I am only trying to bring a little comfort to you because amidst all the celebrations and the champagne if you feel a little out of place, you should know that it is normal and you are not alone. All you need to do is think of a reason to start over.

I want to end this post with a beautiful quote that I had come across :

“And now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been ”

-Rainer Maria Rilke

Happy Holidays Everyone !!!!

The girl who never stopped smiling.

This article isn’t about the girl who has a broken heart or about the girl whose existence is insignificant in the society. This is about the girl who never stops smiling inspite of all the struggle she faces.

Being a girl itself is a task on its own. For some reason Our life is always so complicated, there is always so much to decide. And it’s even more difficult when you are ambitious and come from a conservative background. We have always been taught how to keep everyone happy before and after we get married. Why are we never taught to keep ourselves happy? Or to put our needs ahead of everyone else’s ? We have so many expectations to meet and probably that is why we feel lost and confused.

At some point in the various journeys we embark on in our lives, we get to a point where we feel like giving up. But we don’t. We face everything with a smile. And that Is the greatest thing about being a girl, we never stop loving.

According to most Indian families, your twenties become your “marriage age” . They fail to understand that this is the time for experimenting, having fun, getting to know yourself. This is the time when you are stuck between a kid and a real adult. And they start talking about your responsibilities as a married women. Your parents home doesn’t feel like your home anymore and you start feeling like an outsider. But we have to make a conscious  choice to keep ourselves happy and accept things as they come.

My one suggestion to all such girls would be “don’t sell yourself short”. Let the people you love and who mean the world to you Be your inspiration to persist and persevere. You deserve to be happy so don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
